Air-conditioner makers Voltas, Whirlpool, and others are alarmed by the proposed entry of Chinese player TCL in the domestic markets.
TCL India MD Mike Chen has said that the company will enter AC Market in India next month and launch internet-enabled models with plans to locally manufacture them.
It has formalized plans through a combination of setting up a plant in India coupled with online product sale options which will help it to undercut stockiest and sales commission.
The decision follows online steroids shop it has consolidated its presence in the television market in India.
The segment sales have grown by 281% this year until now.
TCL’s up-coming India plant, built at an outlay of Rs 2470 crore, will be fully operational by the third quarter of 2020.
Voltas, Whirlpool, others are likely to feel the frost given the Chinese companies’ competitive ability.
However, Voltas, India’s largest air conditioner (AC) manufacturer, is confident of outperforming its peers and the industry growth rate.
The optimism stems from the strong demand for cooling products remains strong, which will be sustained over the remaining part of FY20.
The management draws confidence from its performance in the first half of the current fiscal, where revenues of its unitary cooling products (UCPs, which include ACs) segment grew by 39% on-year, ahead of industry growth of 33%.
On the other hand, Whirlpool India which recently entered the top-100 market-cap club is facing problems.

The company’s global parent were forced to recall more than 500,000 washing machines over fire risk.
As per Whirlpool management, despite the recent slowdown in consumer spending, the company is confident of sustaining double-digit sales growth over the medium term.
The company is betting on strong product launches along with execution ramp up and market share gains to lead healthy growth in sales, margins, and earnings.
Net net we believe that the competitive intensity in the domestic consumer durable segment is likely to increase in the near term which will mean more pricing pressure for existing players as they will have to.match prices to beat the competition
As far as both voltas and whirlpool are concerned both if they are seasoned string players and have strong balance sheets and cash flows which will help them fight the Chinese competition. From here on it will be important how each of these players focuses on customer after-sales service as this is a very important variable in this business.
